Which questions should game developers be able to answer about the ethics of the game experience?
What the game really costs, how much time and attention it needs, whether and why it needs access to the player's social network, how mentally and physically demanding it is, and what hardware access it needs and why.
Transparency questions (Hyrynsalmi, Kimppa & Smed 2020):
- How much does the game actually cost (including in-game purchases)?
- How much time and attention does it require?
- Does it need access to the player's social network, and if so, why?
- How demanding is it, mentally and physically?
- What hardware access does it require, and for what purpose?
Value conflicts for the project team (Carvalho et al. 2023):
- Should financial return take priority over moral considerations, e.g. if a "murder" feature sells better than a game without guns?
- How should the team handle demands from the community, e.g. thousands of players asking for guns?
- Should governments set restrictive norms for games beyond age ratings?
- Should games made through over-exploitation and bad working conditions be boycotted, regardless of their technical quality?
