What does Nosedive show about control, self-presentation and the "tyranny of the majority"?
Top-down vertical surveillance is replaced by horizontal control in which every citizen watches every other. A mob can unfairly ruin someone's life (trial by mob), and people present themselves as objects for others' gaze instead of being subjects for themselves.
* The panopticon watches from one tower; in Nosedive everyone rates everyone *
- Horizontal control: instead of a state watching from above, every citizen watches and rates every other.
- Trial by mob: colleagues conspire to push Chester's rating below 2.5 so he loses access to the building. The rating technology is especially open to this kind of abuse.
- Post-truth: facts and logical arguments no longer matter. People decide by "tribe", by what they want to believe or by what they take to be true.
- The gaze of others: Lacie posts a cookie she spat out as "Heaven!" because only the look counts. She sees herself as an object for others rather than a subject for herself, a parody of our obsession with social status at the expense of who we really are.
- Posting as work: social-media posting becomes labour, and everyday media consumption is turned into value creation.
- "Parallel present": the society is described not as a near future but as a parallel present. Peer rating is just the extension of rating services and products, which is already normal.
The values the episode puts in question: privacy, surveillance, transparency and truth.
