What is the avalanche effect?

A property of a good hash function where changing the input even slightly flips the output completely, with no visible pattern between them.

It is what makes a hash a trustworthy fingerprint: nobody can nudge the underlying data while keeping a similar hash. A one-bit change in a block yields a wholly different, unpredictable output.
