What is slashing?

The Proof-of-Stake penalty of confiscating part of a validator's locked stake when it misbehaves (e.g. signs conflicting blocks), enforcing honesty economically.

Where Proof of Work punishes cheating with wasted electricity, Proof of Stake punishes it by burning collateral. Slashing is what makes staked capital a credible bond.
