What is sharding?

A scaling technique that splits a blockchain into several parallel chains ("shards") coordinated by a main chain, so more transactions can be processed at once.

It is an on-chain ("Layer 1") answer to the scalability problem — a "blockchain of blockchains" — whereas rollups scale off-chain. Both aim to serve more users without fees rising without limit.
