What is public verifiability?

The property that any observer can confirm the system's state was updated correctly per the protocol, instead of trusting a central operator's word for it.

It is what most sets a distributed ledger apart from a central system, and it underpins integrity: if anyone can verify the state, anyone can detect unauthorized modification.
