What is mining?

The trial-and-error process of repeatedly hashing a block with different nonces until its hash satisfies the difficulty target, thereby earning the right to add the block.

Mining is deliberately costly to perform but cheap to verify — anyone can confirm a valid block with a single hash. The cost is what secures the chain and rations who may author blocks.
