What is immutability (in a blockchain)?

The guarantee that recorded data cannot be silently altered — not that editing is physically impossible, but that any change is instantly detectable because it invalidates every later block.

An attacker would have to re-mine the edited block and all blocks after it while honest miners race ahead — computationally infeasible on a large chain. Old transactions thus become effectively permanent.
