What is a Sybil attack?

One entity creating many fake identities to gain outsized influence over a network that assumes one-vote-per-participant.

Blockchains defeat it by tying influence to something scarce and costly — computation (Proof of Work) or capital (Proof of Stake) — so a thousand fake nodes buy nothing without a thousandfold real resource. Sybil resistance is the core job of consensus.
