What is a smart contract?

Code deployed on a blockchain that executes automatically when its conditions are met and cannot be altered once deployed, letting parties make self-enforcing agreements without a middleman.

Its defining traits are automatic execution, immutability, and transparency. Because decentralized nodes run it, no single party can flip a switch to break the deal in their favour — "an unbreakable promise you can read."
