What is a sidechain?
A separate blockchain running alongside a Layer 1, connected to it, but which provides its own security rather than inheriting the base chain's.
That is the crucial contrast with a rollup: a rollup borrows the Layer 1's security, a sidechain stands on its own — so a weaker sidechain can be less safe than the chain it attaches to.
