What is a rollup?

A Layer-2 scaling approach that executes many transactions off the base chain, then "rolls them up" and submits them in a compressed batch to the Layer 1.

Its security is inherited from the underlying Layer 1, so it is about as secure as that base chain — the key difference from a sidechain, which secures itself.
