What is a Ricardian contract?

A 1990s idea for a single document that is both human-readable legal prose and machine-executable, cryptographically linked to its code.

It is the ancestor of the "legal-and-smart-contract pair" pattern, which binds an off-chain legal agreement to an on-chain contract so each stores a hash pointing to the other and neither can be swapped unnoticed.
