What is a nonce?
A "number used once" — the one field a miner is free to change in a block, adjusted repeatedly until the block's hash meets the target.
Because a hash is unpredictable, there is no shortcut: the miner brute-forces nonce values until one produces a qualifying hash. Finding that number is the "work" in Proof of Work.
