What is a Layer 2?
A separate protocol built on top of a Layer 1 to extend it, most often to improve scalability by moving transactions off the base chain.
Rollups are a common type: they process many transactions on their own layer and submit them in bulk to the Layer 1, deriving security from that base chain. A sidechain, by contrast, relies on its own separate security.
