What is a confirmation?

Each additional block mined on top of the block containing your transaction, deepening it in the chain and making reversal exponentially less likely.

A brand-new transaction is least safe because it could still lose a fork; waiting for several confirmations (Bitcoin's common rule is six) hardens it. Each confirmation is one more layer of work an attacker would have to beat.
