What does VRF (Verifiable Random Function) mean?

A function that produces a random output together with a proof that the output was generated correctly and was not manipulated by whoever produced it.

A deterministic blockchain cannot make genuine randomness itself, so a VRF (e.g. Chainlink VRF) supplies verifiable randomness for lotteries, Proof-of-Stake proposer selection, and NFT drops.
