What does Value-based Engineering say about not building a technology?

Organisations should actively consider giving up a technology for ethical reasons, because progress does not come from releasing technologies that can do more harm than the value they create for society.

Most development methods only ask how to build a system well. VbE makes renunciation (Verzicht) a legitimate result of the process: if the value analysis shows more harm than benefit, not building it is the right outcome, not a failure. In Spiekermann's ten principles this is the readiness to forgo the system or the investment.
