What does SPV (Simplified Payment Verification) mean?

A way for a lightweight client to verify a payment using only block headers plus a Merkle branch linking the transaction to a block, without downloading or validating the whole chain.

A valid branch shows a network node accepted the transaction, and blocks stacked on top confirm ongoing acceptance. The trade-off: SPV trusts that honest nodes control the network, so businesses often still run full nodes.
