What does PoS (Proof of Stake) mean?

A consensus mechanism where the right to propose a block comes from locking up capital (stake) as collateral instead of spending computation, with cheating punished by slashing.

Only the chosen proposer does real work and the rest just validate, so energy use drops by around 99% versus Proof of Work — the headline reason major networks migrated to it.
