What does HTLC (Hashed Timelock Contract) mean?

A payment-channel construct combining a hashlock and a timelock: the receiver must reveal a secret (proving the hash) before a deadline to claim the payment, or it reverts.

It is what makes multi-hop Lightning payments safe: revealing one secret pulls the payment along the whole route, and the timelock guarantees funds are refunded if the deadline passes.
