What does DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) mean?

An organization whose rules and governance are encoded in on-chain smart contracts, so decisions and operations run transparently rather than through a central management hierarchy.

Members typically vote on-chain (e.g. to allocate shared funds), and the rules enforce themselves. This is what lets mutually distrusting, even anonymous, members coordinate without a trusted authority.
