What are the "Not my problem" and "Red lies" dilemmas?

Not my problem: a team accepts the status quo of its development culture and claims that quality and productivity issues are someone else's responsibility. Red lies: known falsehoods told to customers or management, such as claiming a project is on schedule when the team knows it is late.

  • Not my problem is a failure of ownership. Nobody lies or breaks a rule; everybody points at another role, so nobody acts.
  • Red lies is a failure of honesty in meetings with customers or management. It is the professional counterpart of a "white lie", and it leads others to make decisions (budgets, launches, plans) on false information.
