What are digital paternalism and an "ethical obligation to incompetence"?

Digital paternalism: personalisation that goes so far that algorithms decide what we want or need better than we do, and so erode our capacity for free choice. Obligation to incompetence: the idea that developers should deliberately hold back a technology's full capability to preserve human judgement and responsibility.

  • Digital paternalism puts autonomy at stake: the system replaces the user's choice instead of informing it.
  • The obligation to incompetence applies to domains such as autonomous weapon systems (keeping a human responsible for lethal decisions) and medical diagnosis (supporting the doctor rather than replacing them). It connects to VbE's readiness to forgo technology.
