How do Berenbach and Broy propose to mitigate the dilemmas, and why is that not enough?
By cross-referencing each dilemma with the applicable ACM/IEEE imperative. It is not enough because some imperatives are too broad, one dilemma (Canceled vacation) is not covered at all, and organisational pressure often overrides the code.
The mapping tells a professional which duty is at stake:
- Mission impossible: honour assigned responsibilities, and request a change to impossible assignments.
- Mea culpa, Rush job, Not my problem: strive for the highest quality.
- Nondiligence: evaluate systems and their risks thoroughly.
- Fictionware / vaporware: be honest and trustworthy.
- Sweep it under the rug: highest quality and honouring contracts.
It does not tell them how to act under pressure. The ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct has since been revised (2018).
