Which documents count as identity documents in Switzerland, and what is a physical credential (physischer Ausweis)?

Identity documents are the passport, the Swiss identity card and any identity document recognised for entry into Switzerland; a physical credential is any physical document containing attributes about a natural person, issued as confirmation or legitimation, such as a passport, credit card or driving licence.

Every identity document is a physical credential, but not every physical credential is an identity document: a credit card proves a banking relationship, not who you are.
