Horrified by the tens of thousands of wounded left to die after the Battle of Solferino (1859), the Geneva businessman Henry Dunant wrote A Memory of Solferino and, with four other Genevans (among them General Dufour), founded the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863. Its emblem — a red cross on white, the Swiss flag with its colours reversed — honoured the neutral host country. Dunant would go on to share the very first Nobel Peace Prize.
