What year was the iPhone released, launching the modern smartphone era?

2007 → nose · sack.

A smartphone and a nose sniffing a burlap sack — the iPhone, pegs nose (20) and sack (07) for 2007.

Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone at Macworld in January 2007 and Apple released it that June, pitching it as "an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator" in one device. Its full-screen multitouch interface — pinch, swipe and tap with your fingers, no stylus and no physical keyboard — redefined what a phone was, and the App Store that followed in 2008 turned it into a platform for a whole software economy. It set the template every smartphone since has copied. Peg 20 · 07nose · sack: a nose sniffing a bulging sack. (Note the leading pair 20 = nose, and 07 keeps its zero → sack.)
