At Switzerland's invitation, twelve states signed the First Geneva Convention in 1864, the founding treaty of modern international humanitarian law. It guaranteed care for wounded soldiers regardless of which side they fought on, and the neutrality of medical staff and facilities marked with the red cross — the seed that grew into today's four Geneva Conventions governing the conduct of war.
