In a 1965 article for Electronics magazine, Gordon Moore — later a co-founder of Intel — observed that the number of transistors on a chip was doubling roughly every year while the cost per transistor kept falling. In 1975 he revised the pace to about every two years, and that cadence held for half a century, becoming Moore's Law. It is not a law of physics but an economic and engineering trend — a self-fulfilling roadmap the whole industry organised itself around, driving the relentless doubling of computing power.
