What must already be in place before a team moves on to advanced deployment strategies like canary or blue/green?
A GitOps platform that runs stably and reliably. Advanced deployment techniques are only worth introducing once that foundation works.
"GitOps works" typically means all of these are in place:
- Git as the single source of truth,
- version control of all configuration,
- CI/CD pipelines,
- automated tests,
- Kubernetes or cloud deployments,
- GitOps tools such as Argo CD or Flux, which continuously sync the cluster to the repo,
- monitoring and observability,
- rollback mechanisms.
The order matters because the advanced strategies are built from these parts. A canary release means automatically deploying a version, watching its metrics and rolling back if they are bad. Without a reliable pipeline, observability and rollback, there is nothing to build that on, and you only add complexity to a shaky base.
Tip: Get GitOps running cleanly first, then the clever deployment tricks.
