What is trust (Vertrauen) in IAM, and how is it formalised?

Trust is the conscious decision to accept the authenticity and integrity of a participant in a process even though there is a risk that the expectation is not met; between organisations, entities or domains it is usually formalised in service level agreements.

IAM systems exist to make that risk manageable by guaranteeing a defined level of security and reliability, which is what creates the trust needed for interaction despite unavoidable uncertainty.
