What is provisioning (Provisionierung)?

Provisioning is the process of setting up, managing and removing digital identities or user accounts at entities of the IAM system such as IdPs and RPs, usually by transferring identity data from a central source system to one or more target systems.

It can be manual, automated (once or periodically) or hybrid, and typically covers initialisation, update, deactivation and deletion. It is the "copy in advance" counterpart of federation's "assert at login".
