What is a state-recognised electronic identity (E-ID)?

An E-ID is a digital identity issued by a state or state-recognised body that can be used for secure and legally binding identification of persons in online services.

Under eIDAS an electronic identification means is a material or immaterial unit containing person identification data used for authentication at online (or offline) services, and an electronic identification system is the scheme under which such means are issued to natural or legal persons or their representatives.
