What four benefits does full-stack automation bring to software-defined infrastructure and distributed applications?
- Self-service: users request infrastructure on demand.
- Scaling on demand: capacity grows and shrinks with traffic and workload.
- Observability: the system's internal state can be inferred from its outputs.
- Automated remediation: platforms limit the impact of problems and heal themselves.
These four depend on one another:
- Self-service only works if requesting a server means running automation, not opening a ticket for a person.
- Scaling on demand means adding and removing instances automatically when load changes, including on heterogeneous capacity (different hardware, clouds or regions). Nobody can do this by hand at 3 a.m.
- Observability (what used to be called monitoring) provides the signals. You cannot scale or heal automatically without knowing what the system is doing.
- Automated remediation closes the loop. When observability detects a problem, the platform reacts on its own, for example by restarting a failed container or replacing an unhealthy node.
In short: automation is a key component of software-defined infrastructure and of distributed, dynamic applications. Without it, neither works at scale.
