What do the NETCONF operations get, get-config, edit-config, copy-config and delete-config do?

  • <get>: running configuration plus state information.
  • <get-config>: some or all configuration from a datastore.
  • <edit-config>: change a datastore (create, merge, replace, delete).
  • <copy-config>: copy a configuration to another datastore.
  • <delete-config>: delete a configuration datastore.
Operation What it does Typical use
<get> Returns running configuration and operational state Read interface counters together with their config
<get-config> Returns configuration only, from a chosen datastore Back up the running config
<edit-config> Modifies a datastore with CRUD-style operations Add a VLAN, change an IP
<copy-config> Copies a whole configuration to another datastore Save running to startup
<delete-config> Deletes a configuration datastore Clear the startup config

The split between <get> and <get-config> is the config-vs-state separation that SNMP lacks.
