Walk through the SwissPass online registration: which step verifies what?

The user chooses a registration path, provides SwissPass data or name, date of birth and address (which are checked), sets an e-mail and password, and activates the account via an e-mail link, which simultaneously verifies the e-mail address.

SwissPass is the login used for Swiss public-transport services. Its registration is a compact example of the registration concepts:

  1. Choice of registration process: with an existing SwissPass card or without.
  2. Attributes: either taken from the SwissPass card, or name, date of birth and address are entered and checked against existing records. This is attribute verification against a reliable source.
  3. Authentication means: an e-mail address and password are chosen; the e-mail address doubles as identifier.
  4. Activation via e-mail link: this is a technical verification process. Clicking the link proves control of the mailbox, so the e-mail attribute becomes verified rather than self-declared.

No biometric identification takes place, so this is a registration with verified attributes but without formal identification, which is adequate for buying train tickets.
